Shenandoah has one of the best burgundy foliage of all switch grasses. It's known for its upright, airy form and forms clumps that maintain a neat shape. Its leaves are narrow and green with a reddish tint at the tips in spring. As the season progresses, the foliage transitions to red hues in early summer and then to violet, purple, burgundy and wine-red by early fall. In summer, it produces a profusion of finely textured, reddish-pink flower spikelets that hover over the foliage like a soft, airy cloud.
