Sanguinaria canadensis, commonly known as Bloodroot, is a stunning perennial wildflower that graces gardens with its delicate beauty in early spring. This native plant features striking, white flowers that bloom atop slender stalks, emerging from the embrace of a single, deeply lobed basal leaf. Each flower, measuring up to 2 inches across, showcases 8 to 10 petals surrounding a vibrant cluster of yellow stamens.
 
Bloodroot thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers partial to full shade, making it an ideal choice for woodland gardens or shaded areas. Not only does it provide visual interest with its ephemeral blooms, but its unique reddish-orange sap has historical significance, having been used by Native Americans for dye and medicinal purposes. As the season progresses, the foliage remains lush until mid-summer when the plant goes dormant, allowing it to naturalize beautifully in your garden.
